prendre soin de ses cheveux cet été, protéger ses cheveux du soleil et de la mer

☀️ Summer is coming! But how can you fully enjoy this season without returning from vacation with a straw bale in place of your hair? Here are our tips.

Sun & Swimming: How to protect your hair?

The Sun

In small doses, the sun can be beneficial

  • It promotes the production and synthesis of vitamin D, which is involved in hair growth and renewal.

  • It stimulates the blood circulation of the vessels supplying the scalp. The intake of nutrients increases, and the hair grows faster and stronger.

  • The SUNKISS effect: the sun offers pretty lighter highlights for summer. During UV exposure, UV rays break down melanin, which lightens the hair fiber.

In larger doses, it becomes our enemy

  • UV rays attack keratin, the main structural component of the hair shaft. This leaves the hair unprotected, making it dry, dull, fragile, and prone to split ends.

  • These rays dry out the scalp and alter its pH, which can lead to the appearance of dandruff. (This phenomenon can be compared to skin peeling after sunburn)

  • The sun unbalances sebum and transforms it into a toxin that degrades the roots. Hair is more likely to fall out.

  • Beware of colored hair! Coloring tends to become dull or even change color completely.

Sea & Pool

  • Seawater is made up of small saline crystals that cling to the hair and dehydrate it until it becomes very dry.

  • Consequently, the scalp dries out and becomes irritated by the same phenomenon, which causes itching and sensitive patches, leading to the appearance of dandruff.

  • The sun's rays can amplify the effects of salt crystals, and hair "burns." This is what is responsible for the "straw" effect of hair at the end of summer.

  • Chlorine present in swimming pools also impacts keratin. An oxidation reaction occurs and breaks the structural bonds of the hair, making it very fragile, prone to breakage and split ends.

  • Beware of highlighted blonde hair, which can turn green due to chlorine!

  • As for the wind, it can carry dust particles that cling to the hair, giving it a dull appearance. We also forget that it messes up hair, tangles it, and breaks the fibers.

So, what hair care routine should you adopt for summer?

1. Before exposure

Vegetable Oils

To be applied before exposure, they form a natural UV-protective barrier. Prioritize raspberry seed, wheat germ, avocado, or jojoba oil, which have high protection factors. Also apply to the lengths throughout the day and between swims.

The MakeMyMask Daily Spray contains a selection of ultra-nourishing and protective vegetable oils, including Moringa oil, a miracle plant renowned for its antioxidant and nourishing properties. Its texture leaves no greasy film on the hair, and it is also 100% natural and organic to respect the hair's lengths healthily.

2. During exposure

Rinse with clean water

Rinse your hair with clean water after each swim to remove dust and substances contained in the water (salt, chlorine, sand, etc.).

Hat, cap, or scarf

Protect your hair from UV rays by wearing a hat, cap, or scarf, preferably made of materials that allow hair and scalp to "breathe."

Protective Hairstyle

Adopt a protective hairstyle that prevents breakage, friction on the lengths, sun discoloration, and contact with water. A braid or a bun, for example.

3. After exposure

Wash with a Gentle Shampoo

To avoid further damaging the scalp, wash your hair with a gentle shampoo free of sulfates, silicones or other suffocating and irritating ingredients. Nothing beats a natural shampoo, and this advice is valid for the rest of the year.

Scalp Mask

Perform 1 scalp mask per week: it is essential to maintain its balance by providing it with the necessary nutrients. Plant powders are rich in soothing, moisturizing, and rebalancing botanical active ingredients. To find out the ingredients you need and your hair's exact needs, take our 1-minute hair diagnosis!

Lengths Mask

After a day in the sun, apply a shea butter mask to the lengths. Endowed with moisturizing, nourishing, and regenerating properties, it is essential for summer. It is crucial to gently detangle your lengths to avoid breaking the hair fiber and to use a natural conditioner free of chemicals.
