A dry shampoo scandal was revealed on October 31, 2022.
An independent laboratory detected high levels of benzene in aerosol dry shampoos and is asking the FDA (Food Drug Administration) to recall these products immediately.
Benzene: a proven carcinogen
Benzene is a highly volatile solvent with an aromatic nucleus obtained by petroleum distillation.
According to the WHO (World Health Organization) and the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer), benzene is classified in group 1, meaning it is a proven human carcinogen.
It is a trigger ingredient for leukemia: between 5 and 18% of leukemias are due to occupational exposure to benzene.
An unacceptable contamination percentage
Some samples contained up to approximately 170 times the conditional restriction limit for drugs.
In addition to a significant concentration of benzene in the product, it has been shown that the air was contaminated after spraying the dry shampoo. This suggests a potential for inhalation exposure in the short and long term to high levels of benzene, which is particularly dangerous.
